So this is my first blogpost, aaah! Exciting, nerve-wracking and funnn.
As you can read in my introduction (read: About), I started this blog because I wanted to update my friends and family when I’m travelling. Because yessss, I’ll be travelling a ton this year!
Some of you might be wondering why I started this blog in English. Of course my fam is Dutch so it would have made more sense if my blog was in Dutch as well. However, I realized after 3 years of doing a billingual study (I was basically studying, thinking and dreaming in English lol), I wanted to continue ‘my English journey’. Since I’ll be spending most of my time abroad this year, I’ll probably talk a ton more English with people from all over the world and afterwards I’d love to study International Business in English. Meanwhile, I’d also love to be able to share my blog with people I meet during my travels.
Sooo why am I taking a gap year and what’s my plan this year?
First of all, I just graduated from High school! After 6 years of fun school lunches, study burn-outs, drunk school dances, endless amounts of exams and papers and much laughter with friends. I am done. I DID IT!
I was so relieved when I got that phone call… and even more relieved when I finally signed that paper.
Anyways, I needed a plan after high school. I visited a ton of Universities , Amsterdam, Maastricht, Leiden, Rotterdam, Tilburg and Nijmegen. I’ve seen it all. I looked at a ton of studies, from law to business and from philosophy to communication.
And yeah sure, hearing about student associations and college frat parties got me excited but it just wasnt ‘it’. I wanted something else. I wanted to explore new places, meet new people and go on adventures. I wanted a gap year.
This meant I had to make an entire new plan. I stopped looking at universities and started looking into travel agencies, volunteer projects and travel blogs. And now, after doing all this research, I can finally say that I’ve got a plan, a plan which I’m freaking excited about!
The adventure starts in less than a week! My sisss, Lieke and I will be going to the US in 6 days! We’ll be staying with friends, Megan and Jenna, who I met during my American exchange with school.
It’s been over a year since I’ve seen them and I can’t wait to be reunited! Sooo many girls nights, lunches at chipotle and summer days at the lake. We’ll be visiting Washington DC, Baltimore, Annapolis and we got some mini trips planned to NYC and Florida! I’m beyond excited!
After the American adventure, Liek and I will not be heading straight home, since we have a 10 day stopover in Iceland! Our parents will catch a flight from Amsterdam to Reykjavik the day we arrive in Iceland. Family reunion and roadtrip! Yes please! Be prepared for insanely stunning photos of waterfalls, the blue lagoon and nature hikes.
After almost being a full month away from home, Liek and I will run into our boyfriends arms (aaah cheesy, I know lol.) I’ll have 3 weeks to unpack my suitcases, work as many hours as possible, prepare all the last things for my next adventure, to pack my backpacks and to see all my besties for one last time. And hopefully, I’ll be ready with all of that by the 4th of September, because that’s when I’m flying to India!
I want to make a separate blog post about what I’ll be doing in India, but in short: Karlijn and I will be doing volunteer work with street children in Pondicherry, India.
We’ll live and work on the Boys home project, where we’ll help as much as needed. This could be anything, from teaching English to preparing breakfast and from helping with homework to giving creative art or sport classes. Of course, Karlijn and I would love to see something of the country as well. So we definitely want to travel up north and see the stunning Taj Mahal, go to the pink city Jaipur and visit the insane blue city called Jodhpur. We’d love to go to Sri Lanka as well, however we are not sure yet how much time we’ll have to travel in the 4 months that we are there. Fun fact: my parents will be coming over as well, to visit our boys project and to explore India, aaah so fun! It’ll be a blast to see them after a few months.
After India, I’ll spend a month (or 2) at home, before I’ll be back on the Road with Mich. Michelle and I want to backpack in South East Asia, which is literally a dream come true for me! As said before (read: About), I can’t wait for the backpack adventure with all the raging tuk-tuks, picture perfect palmtrees and full moon parties. We def still kinda need to work out a plan, but we want to keep it casual, so we’ll see where we’ll end up! However, Thailand, Bali and Malaysia are high up on our lists!
After an insane 2,5 months backpack adventure, it’ll be time to head home and to start earning some money again. Not sure what I’ll be doing these few months, but I know I’d love a big paycheck, so I’ll work as much as possible. And of course it’ll be amazing to hang out with my boyfriend and besties again after all those months. I’ll also have to prepare for uni life and find a dorm! And ifff, there would be an opportunity to visit my dream city Marrakech again, I totally would! Which would add a 4th continent to my gap year list.
As you can tell, I’ve got a lot of dreams and plans. So if you want to stay updated on my adventures and life, then stay tuned.
